Results for the city of Valparaiso

Congrio Magarita

conger eel, chilean, dinner,
Submitted by Finn

I think we are the only non-locals in the place. There's a drinking/eating/poker game happening at the table behind us, several locals knocking back shots of what looks like whiskey and not a word of English spoken in the entire room. We never felt uncomfortable or unwelcome though, and we were the only table that got a tablecloth! Lots of seafood was out of season so I ordered Conger Eel again. Served in a spicy-ish cream sauce. it was tender and grilled perfectly.

Chocolate Torte

dessert, dinner, chocolate, cake, torte,
Submitted by Finn

We were the only patrons in the restaurant, so I guess we got last night's dessert. This was stale and dry, a disappointing way to end a pretty good meal otherwise.

Spaghetti Calamari

calamari, spaghetti, dinner,
Submitted by Finn

Calamari was really fresh and the cream sauce smooth and flavourful. The restaurant of note at the top of this asensor is Cafe Turri, but if you walk past Turri, make a few twists and turns you will stumble onto this spot. Well work seeking out.

Salad Mixto Grande

olive oil, lemon, peas, salad, cabbage, carrot, avocado, dinner,
Submitted by Finn

Higher-end restaurants are just starting to pop-up in Valparaiso, a city better known for older restaurants with exceptional food; and it's hard to compete with that. This salad was super fresh and I loved how it was presented all seperated. Dressed only in fresh squeezed lemon, olive oil and salt, it was simple and delicious.

Calacones a la Pil Pil

shellfish, Spicy, stew, appetizer,
Submitted by Finn

English Style Bar in the heart of one of the oldest cities in Chile. This particular spot had a bag and a half of atmosphere, and the excellent food was the icing on the cake. Shellfish appetizer stewed in a spicy tomatoe sauce. Great flavour and not too 'picante', served with a bottemless basket of bread.

Double Expresso

coffee, expresso, chocolate, breakfast,
Submitted by Finn

Breakfast of Champions. Coffee is all I usually take early in the morning, so the chocolate square make this a meal. The expresso was great, and the coffee shop one of the more modern spots in this centuries-old city.

Quarter Chicken With Fries

Chicken, lunch, Fries, onions, gravy,
Submitted by Finn

This joint was a hole-in-the-wall (typical in Valparaiso), but the service was great (even if the waiter looked like a hobo) and the food decent. Even though you can get a dish like this at any Swiss Chalet I'd rather come here.

Manchas Salsa Verde

clams, salsa, seafood, appetizer,
Submitted by Finn

Fresh clams in a spicy green salsa. The restaurant is over 118 years old, and its longevity is a testiment to the food. The interior has seen better days, but who cares about decor when the food is good. Well worth seeking out!

Table Queso

A few beers and platter of cheese and crackers - the perfect afternoon snack when on vacation. The patio sat high on a cliff and overlooked downtown Valparaiso. Good mix of hard and soft Chilean cheeses.
