Spicy Peatnut Noodle Box

Submitted by wilhelmus

Best take-out lunch I've had in a long, long, long time. Meal is prepared in big woks right in front of you. You can get it from very mild to insanely spicy. I'm know to handle spicy food very well (a Thai chef once came to my table because he didn't believe a Caucasian would be able to eat his meal). I ordered the 2th spiciest option and it nearly floored me. I've met my match noodle box!
Veggie Benny

Submitted by Finn

John's Place is somewhat of an institution in Victoria. My wife and I went on our second date here. Honest, home-style cooking keeps hungry customers coming back. They were also one of the forerunners in the slow-food movement, a back-lash against the zillions of fast-food joints that dot the landscape. I kind of wish they had moved even slower on my breakfast today. All the right ingredients were there, but I just found it really bland.
Eggs Bennie Florentine

Submitted by wilhelmus

Johns place is a bit of a famous breakfast place in Victoria. It's a bit strange that during my 3 years in Victoria, I never once had breakfast there. But during my last visit I made up for it and I must say that it didn't really live up to the expectation. Sure, the place is nicely decorated with baseball memorabilia and signed celebrity photos, but the food was so so.
Brownie

Submitted by Finn

Needed a quick sugar fix, and this did the trick. Nothing exceptional, standard pre-made brownie that you can get pretty much anywhere.
Lobster

Submitted by Finn

A nice change from the way you usually get lobster - with a big vat of butter on the side for dipping. This plate was tossed in a soya sauce base, delicous. The lobster meat and soya sauce make a really nice combination.
Crab Balls

Submitted by Finn

Crab and shrimp meat balls, battered, deep fried and served with a tangy dipping sauce. Scald-the-roof-of-your-mouth hot, so bite in with caution. A nasty Catch-22 really, because these don't taste as good warm.
Crispy Duck

Submitted by Finn

Okay so the duck isn't crispy, just the skin. I'm not really a fan of duck, I find it too oily, but this was tender and well prepared.
Dried Scallop Soup

Submitted by Finn

What is a Chinese banquet without Scallop Soup, a miserable failure if you ask my Mom. We knock this soup back everytime we have a big family gathering. Thickened soup featuring chicken broth base, scallops and dried tofu. An acquired taste, but I love it.
Strawberry French Toast

Submitted by Finn

Special New Year's Day offering. Thick-cut bread, strawberry topping, not-too-sweet syrup. My wife gave it four stars. "Too bad it's not a regular menu item."
Smoked Salmon and Papaya Omelette

Submitted by Finn

Really unexceptional. I know this isn't really a good description, but it was too "eggy". Yeah even I don't know what that means exactly, but it describes this omelette perfectly. Pretty good blend of smoked salmon, papaya and cream cheese, but it was overpowered by egg - go figure.
