Space Needle Scramble

Submitted by Finn

I love eating at diners, so when I spotted this one I had to stop in. It's 8:00 on a Sunday morning and already there's a line-up, a promising sign. Not exactly sure why they pay homage to a Seattle landmark 400km to the north; for the veggie sausage maybe? Whatever the reason this scramble was awesome. Eggs were fluffy, cheese nicely melted and spinach not too soggy - great combination of flavours. I question just how veggie the sausage really was (it sure tasted like meat) but other than that I dug into this dish with gusto.
Schnitzel With Mushroom Sauce

Equally terrible was my wife's meal. Unlike mine, at least hers was as advertised. The veal was overcooked and the mushroom sauce tasted like Campbell's Mushroom Soup straight out of the can.
Mushroom and Herb Frittata

Submitted by Finn

One of our favourite places for a casual bite to eat. Well prepared food, good choice of beers, all coffees are Americanos, plus a ton of room for our son to run around. Great frittata with fresh basil, sun dried tomatoes, crimini mushrooms and brie. The only thing I could have done without was the syrup used to garnish the plate. Tasteless and tart (okay, I guess tart technically is a flavour), I ended off eating around the syrup.
Deep Fried Mushrooms and Fries

On our way from Dublin to Killarney, we stopped in the little town of Toomyvara. For fried food, this was very tasty. I didn't expect this at all in lamb-stew country.
Seafood Hash

A popular restaurant surprisingly empty for Sunday brunch. I tend to gravitate to places where other happy diners are chowing, so I wasn't expecting a lot. This was delicious. Big chunks of salmon, scallops, and shrimp tossed together with spinach, peppers and mushrooms. Topped with two eggs and hollandaise sauce. Simple enough, but simple is what I want on a Sunday morning.
Isn't that a Lionel Richie song? I can't believe I've just paraphrased Lionel Richie. Excuse me while I go set fire to my ears.
Grilled Vegetable Omelette

Submitted by Finn

This was decent. Grilled zucchini, mushrooms, peppers, mozzarella and parmesan folded into three scrambled eggs. But the last six omelets I've had have ranged from bad to average, so I think I'm off omelets for a while. Not a reflection on this omelette in particular, I've just hit my omelette threshold.
Large Quattro Pizza

Submitted by Finn

The spawn of a bitter divorce between the husband and wife owners of Lombardo's pizzeria, just three blocks south on Commercial Drive, Marcello's serves up similar food (thin crust, Naples-style pizza, pasta and other Italian goodies) but in a much ritzier setting. I was having trouble deciding on a pizza, so we went for a Quattro; four different pizzas in one. Nice thin, crispy crust, subtle sauce and not over-loaded with toppings. To be honest I wasn't impressed my previous two visits, but hey, third time lucky? This time around I quite enjoyed my food - it was really good. Unfortunately the service hasn't improved though, ranging between uppity and non-existent. Too bad, the service skews the rating of an otherwise delicous meal.
Poh Piu Sod

Submitted by Finn

Spring Roll with tofu, zucchini, cabbage and mushroom, wrapped in lumpiu skin. Eerily similar to the Guai Tiew Lod (wrapped in rice noodle) but spiced differently enough to justify a different name. Couldn't tell the difference between lumpiu skin and rice noodle, oh well tasty enough. Topped with a mustard flavoured sauce.
Cheese & Mushroom Omelette

I love greasy spoons; the food is usually decent, prices cheap and atmosphere by the bucket. We were drawn in with those chintzy oil paintings you get at the fair, and stayed for the food. Straight ahead omelette and good coffee, yum.
